Stamped Metal Tags from co*ke Cans! - Positively Splendid {Crafts, Sewing, Recipes and Home Decor} (2024)

By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Love the looked of metal stamping, but wanting to keep your crafting budget to a minimum? Use empty soda cans to create DIY stamped metal tags! Let me show you how it’s done.
There is something so gratifying about taking something that would otherwise be tossed in the garbage or recycling bin and turning it into something beautiful. I have to say when the idea I’m sharing with you today first popped into my head, I was absolutely giddy!
I was playing with my Epic machine a few days back testing out some terrific dies that are set to be released by Lifestyle Crafts later this month (a sneak peek of one of my projects is below), when my ubiquitous can of Diet co*ke caught my eye.

Why, I thought, couldn’t I dismantle the can as I did last year for my co*ke Can Napkin Rings and then run those metal pieces through my manual die-cutting machine like I would paper?
Unsure of whether or not it would work, I decided to give it a shot. Lo and behold, it worked like a charm!

Once my tags were cut, I simply stamped them with my metal stamps, tapping ever so gently with my hammer. (Because the metal here is so thin, any vigorous hammering will make a hole in your tag, so tread softly.)

To make the wording stand out nicely, I used a permanent marker to color in each letter on my tags, and then used a baby wipe to wipe away the excess ink. On some tags, I used a hole punch to make a hole for threading ribbon through (to use on gifts), and on some, I left the tags as-is to use as a decorative touch on any number of projects!

Here is a sneak of the project I was working on when I dreamed up this idea. (Stay tuned for the full project later this month!) Would anyone ever believe this stylish little tag started out life as a beverage can? Let’s let it be our little secret, shall we?

Note: I only tested this process out on my manual die-cutting machine and NOT my computerized version. I would imagine this material would wreak absolute havoc on those delicate blades!
Thanks so much for reading! And Happy Friday!!

The way the dies cut on my machine, the edges where a bit rounded, and not too sharp. So glad you like this idea! 🙂
