Who's rated too high? Who's rated too low? Who's missing entirely?

Those are among the questions we set out to answer while perusing the roster for all 30 teams in MLB The Show 23 from San Diego Studio.

Here's a quick rundown of what you'll find on each team page:

    • Top 10 Players:The 10 highest-rated players on the team's MLB roster, based on the current live rosters for standard gameplay. These are not the Diamond Dynasty rankings.
    • Franchise Mode Target:An up-and-coming player with good in-game potential who is worth targeting late in fantasy drafts in franchise mode. The focus here was on players with an overall rating of 75 or lower.
    • Overrated:The player I felt had an overall rating that was too high relative to his real-life abilities.
    • Underrated:The player I felt had an overall rating that was too low relative to his real-life abilities.
    • Instant Reaction:The first thought that popped into my head while looking through each team's roster for the first time.

    Enjoy!

Overrated: SP Kyle Hendricks (74 overall)

Underrated: LF Ian Happ (75 overall)

Overrated: SP Michael Kopech (81 overall)

Underrated: 1B Andrew Vaughn (72 overall)

Instant Reaction: Shortstop Tim Anderson has a 99 contact tool against left-handed pitching, which makes sense after he hit an absurd .397/.426/.535 against southpaws during the 2022 season.

Overrated: SP Aaron Civale (75 overall)

Underrated: LF Steven Kwan (76 overall)

Underrated: LF David Peralta (69 overall)

Instant Reaction: Evan Phillips (90 overall) is one of only three relievers in the game with a 90 rating, joining Emmanuel Clase (93 overall) and Edwin Díaz (92 overall). The 28-year-old was lights out last season, but that was surprising given his lack of previous success.

    8. 3B Matt Carpenter (79 overall)
    9. 1B Jake Cronenworth (79 overall)

Franchise Mode Target: SS Jackson Merrill (60 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: 3B Matt Carpenter (79 overall)

Underrated: RP Nabil Crismatt (64 overall)

Instant Reaction: A 74 rating on plate vision for Juan Soto? Seriously?!?!? That's as egregiously bad as any single skill rating for any player in the game.

Overrated: SS Brandon Crawford (77 overall)

Underrated: 2B Wilmer Flores (69 overall)

Instant Reaction: He might only be a 65 overall, but if you're playing head-to-head against someone online, there are not many pitchers in the game who are harder to hit than submarine reliever Tyler Rogers.

Instant Reaction: I found it interesting that Julio Rodríguez and his NL Rookie of the Year counterpart Michael Harris II were both given 89 overall ratings. Who will come out on top by the final ratings update?

Franchise Mode Target: 3B Jordan Walker (68 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP Jordan Montgomery (81 overall)

Underrated: RP Jake Woodford (62 overall)

Instant Reaction: I don't necessarily think he's massively overrated, but if Jordan Montgomery ends up being the best pitcher in the St. Louis rotation during the 2023 season, it probably means the Cardinals are in trouble.

Franchise Mode Target: SP Taj Bradley (66 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP Tyler Glasnow (84 overall)

Underrated: 1B Harold Ramírez (70 overall)

Instant Reaction: Love the respect for Jason Adam, who was the best under-the-radar pickup of the 2021-22 offseason. Everything clicked for the 31-year-old journeyman last year, and he had a 1.56 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 10.7 K/9 with eight saves and 22 holds in 67 appearances.

Overrated: SP Danny Duffy (77 overall)

    9. SP Chris Bassitt (82 overall)
    10. CP Jordan Romano (82 overall)

Franchise Mode Target: SP Ricky Tiedemann (66 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: 2B Whit Merrifield (78 overall)

Underrated: SP Hyun Jin Ryu (72 overall)

Instant Reaction: My gut said an 84 overall was too low for Bo Bichette, but his offensive ratings are all solid, and it's his 50 overall fielding that is dragging down his overall rating. That seems fair.

Franchise Mode Target: SS CJ Abrams (67 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP Stephen Strasburg (82 overall)

Underrated: 2B Luis García (68 overall)

Instant Reaction: Considering Stephen Strasburg remains sidelined indefinitely and might legitimately never pitch again, an 82 overall rating feels awfully generous.
