90 countries to attend Swiss-hosted Ukraine peace summit that Russia is snubbing

  • By JAMEY KEATEN - Associated Press

Switzerland’s president says nearly 90 countries and organizations, half from Europe, have confirmed attending the Swiss-hosted Ukraine peace summit over the weekend despite Russia’s refusal to participate in the conference. Viola Amherd told reporters Monday that the summit will aim to chart a path toward possible peace nearly 28 months after Russian forces invaded Ukraine. The Swiss president added that most participants — about half of which will be represented at the level of head of state or government — are country leaders, but “a handful” are from organizations like the United Nations. Some, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are expected to attend the summit at the Buergenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne.

Euro 2024: Guide to the 10 stadiums across Germany and their games

  • By JAMES ELLINGWORTH - AP Sports Writer

The European Championship in Germany is all about tried and tested stadiums with a rich soccer history. Unlike at some recent World Cups, there’s been no rush to finish stadiums on time. All but one of Germany’s 10 venues hosted games at the 2006 World Cup and none have undergone major changes. Here is a guide to the 10 stadiums and all of the games taking place at each.

Bulgaria’s center-right party leads in both national and European elections

  • AP

Bulgaria’s center-right GERB party led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has received most votes in the country’s parliamentary election but will need at least two partners to form a governing coalition. The country’s sixth vote for the National Assembly in three years was held Sunday parallel with European Parliament elections. Both votes were marked by apathy that kept turnout at a record low of about 30%. The results produced one more deeply fragmented parliament, which does not offer many options for restoring political stability in the European Union’s poorest member country. Many suggest another parliamentary election is likely.

Another surprise? Europe’s biggest soccer show to begin in Germany and as usual it’s unpredictable

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

A returning Cristiano Ronaldo, a rampant Kylian Mbappé and a resurgent Germany. Throw in a Harry Kane-powered England and defending champion Italy and Euro 2024 is wide open. That’s without mentioning three-time winner Spain. The unpredictability of the European Championship is what makes it such compelling viewing. Even in its expanded format of 24 teams, there is always the potential for a surprise. This is the tournament that was won by rank outsider Greece in 2004. In 1992 it was won by a team that hadn’t even qualified for the finals after Denmark was granted entry at the 11th hour because war-torn Yugoslavia was banned. Don’t rule out a wildcard coming out of the pack.

South Korea says North Korea is installing its own loudspeakers along the border

  • By KIM TONG-HYUNG - Associated Press

South Korea’s military says it’s detecting signs that North Korea is installing its own loudspeakers along their border, a day after the South blared anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts over its speakers for the first time in years. South Korea said its loudspeaker broadcast on Sunday was in retaliation for the North sending over 1,000balloonsfilled with trash and manure over the last couple of weeks.North Korea has described its balloon campaign as a tit-for-tat against South Korean civilian groups flying anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets across the border.

Taiwan nighttime dragon boat racing puts a modern twist on an ancient tradition

  • AP

Across the Chinese diaspora, racing in dragon boats has been a tradition reaching back thousands of years. But change is afoot, In central Taiwan, the races were switched to the evening to take advantage of cooler temperatures, a refreshing breeze and the sight of the boats lit up with LED lights running the length of the low-lying watercraft. It is an amateur sport and crews are formed among groups of friends, neighbors and co-workers. Dragon boat races are also being held in Hong Kong and Macao, as well as around mainland China.

The main takeaways after the far right rocks European politics, sparking a snap election in France

  • By LORNE COOK - Associated Press

A four-day election has shaken the European Union's parliament to its foundations. Hard right parties rocked ruling parties in France and Germany, the EU's main driving forces. France faces snap national elections in just three weeks. The party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which has neo-fascist roots, won more than 28% of the national vote for the EU assembly, which would make it a key player in forming future alliances. Still, the center has held. Pro-European parties remain the biggest in the 27-nation bloc's assembly. But it will be harder to pass laws and do business there for the next five years. Environmentalist Greens and pro-business liberal groups suffered heavy defeats.

Australia's leader says opposition will renege on greenhouse gas emissions target if elected

  • By ROD McGUIRK - Associated Press

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the opposition Liberal Party will renege on the nation’s ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 if it wins elections due within a year. Albanese on Monday made Australian action on climate change an issue in elections due by next May in response to comments that Peter Dutton, leader of the conservative opposition party, made to a newspaper. Dutton said he opposes the center-left Labor Party government’s plan to reduce emissions by 43% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade. The opposition's climate and energy spokesperson says Dutton was acknowledging that Australia would not meet the 43% target that Parliament enshrined into law in 2022.

Sudan's notorious paramilitary group loots a Darfur hospital, aid group says

  • By SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press

Doctors Without Borders says the notorious Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, fighting Sudan’s military for over a year, fired shots and looted a health facility in the western region of Darfur, forcing its closure. The RSF, attacked the South Hospital in al-Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur province on Sunday, opening fire on medical staff and patients, the aid group said in a statement. Most patients and the medical team managed to flee the shooting. It was not immediately clear if there were casualties. This came as the RSF intensified its offensive to try and wrest control of the city, the military’s last stronghold in the sprawling Darfur region.

Poland's centrist premier Tusk is strengthened by EU election win but populists are at his heels

  • By VANESSA GERA - Associated Press

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist party clinched its first electoral victory over a right-wing populist party in a decade by taking the most votes in the European Parliament election. While the results, announced Monday, solidified his position, they also showed that his lead is small, and that support for the far right is rising. His Civic Coalition took 37.1% of the votes in Sunday’s EU election. The nationalist Law and Justice, which held power from 2015 until last year, got 36.2%. Confederation, a far-right party with a vocal anti-Ukraine stance, had its best result ever, coming third with 12.1%.

The far right's election gains rattle EU's traditional powers, leading Macron to call snap polls

  • By RAF CASERT, LORNE COOK and SAMUEL PETREQUIN - Associated Press

Far-right parties rattled the traditional powers in the European Union with major gains in parliamentary seats, dealing an especially humiliating defeat to French President Emmanuel Macron, who called snap legislative elections. Some ballots in the vote for the European Parliament were still being counted Monday, but the outcome showed the 27-nation bloc’s parliament membership has clearly shifted to the right. The Christian Democrats of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remained by far the biggest group and de facto brokers of the ever-expanding powers of the legislature. But the surge by nationalist and populist parties will make it much harder for the assembly to approve legislation on issues ranging from climate change to agriculture policy.
